The Gist
SavvyDiction is a free vocabulary-learning app made by James Watt. You save words you come across while reading, we show you their definitions, and, if you opt in, we send you a daily push notification using one of your words in an example sentence.
These Terms of Service ("Terms") describe our commitments to you, and your rights and responsibilities when using the service. Please read them carefully. If you don't agree to these Terms, don't use SavvyDiction.
These Terms are adapted from Automattic's open-source legal documents, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license. This adapted version is available under the same license, and you're welcome to copy, adapt, and repurpose it, as long as you revise it to reflect your actual practices and keep the credit chain intact.
1. Who's Who
"You" means any individual who accesses or uses SavvyDiction. "We" and "us" mean James Watt, the individual operator of SavvyDiction. These Terms govern your access to and use of the website and app at savvydiction.com, including the installable PWA and push notifications (our "Services").
By accessing or using any part of our Services, you agree to be bound by these Terms and by our Privacy Policy, which together form the agreement between you and us (the "Agreement").
2. Your Account
To use SavvyDiction you need an account, created with an email address and password. When you create an account you agree to:
- provide accurate information and keep it up to date
- keep your password secure and confidential
- be responsible for all activity that happens under your account
- notify us promptly if you believe your account has been compromised
You can delete your account at any time from within the app. Deletion is immediate and permanent: your account, saved words, collections, push subscriptions, and notification history are all removed and cannot be recovered.
3. Minimum Age Requirements
Our Services are not directed to children. You may not access or use our Services if you're under the age of 13 (or 16 in Europe). If you register as a user, you represent that you meet this age requirement. If you're under 18 (or the legal age of majority where you live), you may use our Services only under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian who agrees to this Agreement.
4. The Service Is Free
SavvyDiction is currently provided free of charge. There are no fees, subscriptions, or in-app purchases. If that ever changes, we'll give you clear advance notice, and nothing will be charged without your explicit agreement.
Because the service is free, we may set reasonable usage limits (for example, on how many words can be added in a period) to keep it available for everyone.
5. Acceptable Use
You agree that your use of our Services:
- will comply with all applicable laws and regulations;
- will not be for any unlawful purpose or in furtherance of illegal activities;
- will not infringe or misappropriate anyone's intellectual property rights;
- will not involve sending spam or unsolicited messages;
- will not interfere with, disrupt, or attack the Services or any other service or network;
- will not overburden our systems or impose a disproportionately large load on our infrastructure (for example, through scraping or automated bulk requests);
- will not involve attempting to access other users' accounts or data; and
- will not involve reselling the Services or systematically extracting our data without our consent.
6. Content
Your content. The words you save and the collections you create remain yours. You grant us only the limited rights needed to operate the Services: to store your words, look up their definitions, generate example sentences, and send you notifications.
Dictionary content.Definitions and etymologies are sourced from third-party dictionary providers (such as Merriam-Webster and the Free Dictionary API) and remain subject to those providers' rights and terms.
AI-generated content.Example sentences are generated by large language models (via Groq, or Anthropic as a fallback). They're meant to be fun and helpful, but they're machine-generated: we don't guarantee they're accurate, appropriate, or a perfect model of usage. Don't rely on them as authoritative language guidance.
7. Feedback
We love hearing from you. If you share comments, ideas, or feedback about the Services, you agree that we're free to use them without any restriction or compensation to you.
8. Third-Party Services
The Services rely on third-party providers, including Supabase (database and authentication, hosted in the EU), Vercel (hosting), Resend (transactional email), browser push services (Google, Apple, Mozilla), dictionary APIs, and language-model providers. We're not responsible for interruptions or issues originating with these third parties, though we'll do our best to work around them. See our Privacy Policy for exactly what data each provider receives.
9. Changes to These Terms
We may modify these Terms from time to time, for example to reflect changes to our Services or for legal, regulatory, or security reasons. If we do, we'll post the amended Terms and update the "Last updated" date above. For material changes we'll provide more prominent notice (such as in-app). Changes apply on a going-forward basis. By continuing to use the Services after changes take effect, you agree to be bound by the new Terms. If you don't agree, you can stop using the Services and delete your account at any time.
10. Termination
We may suspend or terminate your access to the Services at any time if we believe, in our reasonable discretion, that you have violated this Agreement, or where necessary for legal or security reasons. Where practical, we'll give you notice and a chance to export or note down your saved words first.
You can stop using the Services or delete your account at any time.
11. Disclaimers
Our Services are provided "as is." To the maximum extent allowed by applicable law, we disclaim all warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't warrant that the Services will be error-free, that access will be continuous or uninterrupted, or that definitions and generated sentences will be accurate. SavvyDiction is a hobby project run by one person. We'll do our best, but please set your expectations accordingly.
Nothing in these Terms affects any statutory rights you have as a consumer that cannot be excluded or limited by agreement.
12. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event will we be liable with respect to any subject matter of this Agreement under any contract, negligence, strict liability, or other legal or equitable theory for: (i) any special, incidental, or consequential damages; (ii) the cost of procurement of substitute services; (iii) interruption of use or loss or corruption of data; or (iv) any amounts that exceed US$50.
If you are a consumer in Europe, we limit our liability to the maximum amount permissible in your country of residence. This limitation does not apply to any statutory liability that cannot be limited, to liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or to liability caused by our willful misconduct or gross negligence.
13. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from and against any and all losses, liabilities, demands, damages, costs, claims, and expenses, including reasonable attorneys' fees, arising out of your violation of this Agreement or applicable law. This section does not apply to the extent prohibited by consumer-protection law in your country of residence.
14. Jurisdiction and Applicable Law
Except to the extent any applicable law provides otherwise, this Agreement and any access to or use of our Services will be governed by the laws of England and Wales, excluding its conflict-of-law provisions, and the proper venue for any disputes will be the courts of England and Wales in London. Nothing in this Agreement affects your rights as a consumer to rely on mandatory provisions of the law of your country of residence.
15. Miscellaneous
This Agreement constitutes the entire agreement between you and us concerning the Services. If any part of this Agreement is found to be unenforceable, that part will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the rest of the Agreement will remain in full effect. A waiver by either party of any term or condition of this Agreement is not a waiver of that term on any other occasion. You may not assign your rights under this Agreement. We may assign our rights in connection with a transfer of the Services, provided your rights are unaffected.
